St. Augustine High School Mock Trial Team
2009-2010 Mock Trial Team
Moderator: Adam Frick
The St. Augustine High School Mock Trial team
completed its sophomore season on March 3rd, 2009, finishing third in the
district competition, behind traditional powerhouses Jesuit and McGehee. Our
goal for our first year was to compete. Our goal for the second season
was to be competitive. Our goal for the upcoming season is to win district!
Mock Trial is a competition composed of two teams ,
each with three student-attorneys and three student-witnesses. Practice and
competition challenges students to develop the critical thinking skills
necessary to comprehend all specifics and subtleties of the law, techniques
and questioning, and oral advocacy. Mock Trials leave student participants
with an appreciation of the complexities which a judge, lawyer and juries
face while presenting the relevant facts and legal arguments of any given
case, and insure the just revolution of a given issue. It is a great way to
build confidence as a public speaker or a debater, and offers students a
doorway to a career in law.
Every season, students take at least one field trip
to the New Orleans district court to watch an actual case in session.
Students receive visits from judges and attorneys throughout the Mock Trial
season, and one of our coaches is an attorney himself! The Mock Trial team
takes part in at least three friendly scrimmages with other district teams,
and takes one weekend trip for a regional tourney. Also, Mock Trial team
members may earn a letter or garment for involvement with the team.
If you have any questions regarding
joining or participating in mock trial, please contact Mr. Frick after
school Monday-Thursday or through his email address:
africk@purpleknights.com.
Mock Trial Practices are usually
held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
You are always welcome to join Mock
Trial.
